Doosan Enerbility, Meralco to collaborate on energy projects

South Korea's Doosan Enerbility Co. announced on Wednesday that executives from Manila Electric Company (Meralco), the largest power company in the Philippines, visited its headquarters in Changwon the previous day.

The visit was organized to strengthen cooperation between Meralco and Doosan Enerbility on energy projects in the Philippines.

The delegation included Chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan and other key executives.

Founded in 1903, Meralco is the largest private power company in the Philippines, supplying 55% of the country's total electricity across 39 cities and 72 municipalities.

During the visit, the delegation toured facilities including the plant producing the main equipment for the Korean-type APR1400 reactor, the plant manufacturing 380-megawatt power gas turbines and the forging plant housing the world's largest 17,000-ton press.

Following this visit, the two companies plan to accelerate cooperation in nuclear power, including the stalled Bataan nuclear power plant project, such as small modular reactors (SMRs), combined cycle power plants, and gas turbines.

Doosan Enerbility has been intensifying local marketing efforts, including introducing South Korean gas turbines and hydrogen turbines to potential customers like Meralco and officials from the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Manila last year.

The Philippines is considered an advantageous market for exporting Korean gas turbines with the same 60 Hz frequency as South Korea.
