South Korea's Doosan Enerbility Co. plans to introduce carbon reduction technologies, including ammonia co-firing and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) at a thermal power plant in Thailand.
Doosan Enerbility announced on Thursday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on joint research and review of ammonia co-firing and CCUS technology with GPSC, the power generation subsidiary of Thailand's state-owned oil company PTT.
The two companies will conduct research and feasibility studies on the application of ammonia co-firing and CCUS technology at the Gheco-One power plant operated by GPSC in Thailand until 2026.
Additionally, they agreed to establish a comprehensive cooperative relationship to introduce carbon-neutral power generation technologies such as small modular reactors (SMRs), offshore wind and hydrogen.
According to Doosan Enerbility, applying 20% ammonia co-firing at the 700-megawatt Gheco-One power plant could reduce annual carbon dioxide emissions by 700,000 tons. This is equivalent to reforesting an area larger than one-fourth of Bangkok.
"The Gheco-One power plant, which Doosan Enerbility designed, manufactured and supplied the main equipment for, and constructed, is expected to see active cooperation in various carbon reduction technologies from Doosan," said Kim Jeong-kwan, Head of Doosan Enerbility's Power Generation Division.
