Taihan Cable enters HVDC market in US

South Korea's Taihan Cable & Solution Co. said on Thursday that it was selected as the cable supplier for a 320kV voltage-type high-voltage direct current (HVDC) 500kV high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) project under construction in the US.

The US-based power firm LS Power Grid California commissioned this project. The total contract value is around 90 billion won ($67.7 million).

The project is being promoted in areas such as San Jose and Silicon Valley in California, where power demand has surged due to the recent growth of artificial intelligence (AI)-related businesses and advanced information technology (IT) companies.

Through this project, Taihan Cable is entering the US HVDC market for the first time. HVDC is a key technology for long-distance, large-scale power transmission, and only a few companies have successfully commercialized it.

The 500kV HVAC cable system is the highest voltage for commercially available AC underground cables. It has been designated as a national core technology and was developed and commercialized by Taihan Cable.

The company explained that winning this contract was largely due to its competitiveness and proven technical capabilities from various projects carried out within the US.

Taihan Cable has been focusing its sales efforts since 2017, anticipating increased demand for replacing the aging US power grid, and has consistently achieved results.
