South Korea's LG Chem Ltd., the world’s fourth-largest chemical manufacturer, said on Wednesday it will expand into the automotive adhesives market, beginning with the supply of thermal conductive adhesives for North American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers.
The company aims to grow this segment into a multi-hundred-million-dollar business.
Thermal conductive adhesives bond battery cells to modules or packs. They are essential for thermal control and performance maintenance, high thermal conductivity and electrical insulation.
LG Chem has built a technological edge with over 180 patents in thermal conductive adhesives and provides customized solutions for clients. Recently, the company has been developing products that enhance thermal performance and contribute to cost reduction and weight reduction.
LG Chem strengthened its automotive adhesive business in 2018 by acquiring US-based company Uniseal, Inc.
LG Chem collaborates with domestic and international firms to develop various adhesive materials, including polyimide varnish for motor inverters and converters and silver nano paste.
