Hanwha Ocean, Canadian firms to collaborate on submarine projects

South Korea's Hanwha Ocean Co. announced on Friday that it partnered with three Canadian companies at Canada’s largest defense exhibition, CANSEC.

The three companies Hanwha Ocean will collaborate with are CAE Inc., Curtiss-Wright Indal Technologies Corp. and Gastops Ltd.

At the Deep Blue Forum 2023, a Canadian submarine specialist forum held last year, CAE and Hanwha Ocean signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU). To further strengthen their collaboration, they have upgraded their relationship to a teaming agreement this year.

Hanwha Ocean has signed MOUs with Curtiss-Wright for cooperation in the towed sonar operating systems sector and with Gastops for cooperation in the propulsion system control, modeling and simulation sectors.

The company plans to expand cooperation with these three companies in areas such as technology exchange, joint research and development, and market development.

Through these partnerships with local companies, Hanwha Ocean aims to win deals for submarine projects promoted by the Canadian government.

The Canadian government plans to introduce new submarines to replace the four Victoria-class submarines currently owned and operated by the Navy.
