South Korea's Samsung SDI Co., the sixth-largest electric vehicle cell maker globally, announced on Friday that it has become the first secondary battery company to receive carbon footprint certification from Carbon Trust.
Established by the UK government in 2001, Carbon Trust focuses on tackling climate change and reducing carbon emissions.
Two Samsung SDI products have been awarded the certification: the 4.8 ampere-hours (Ah) cylindrical battery cell and the 49.5 Ah prismatic battery module, both major components in electric vehicles.
The carbon footprint certification is based on the global carbon emissions calculation standard PAS2050 and the EU product environmental footprint detail guidelines for batteries, EU PEFCRs.
As part of its commitment to sustainability, Samsung SDI is aiming to transition all its business facilities to 100% renewable energy by 2050, through equipment replacement and waste energy recycling.
"Our recognition through carbon footprint certification underlines our commitment to environmental sustainability and our continuous efforts to reduce carbon emissions," CEO of Samsung SDI Choi Yoon-ho said. "We strive to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly future society through our leading-edge technology."
Alongside the certification, Samsung SDI published its 2023 Sustainability Report detailing its sustainability activities and achievements. Now in its 20th year, the report discloses ESG issues and information, further demonstrating the company's commitment to environmental and corporate responsibility.
