South Korea’s SK Energy Co., refiner giant SK Innovation Co.’s petroleum production subsidiary, said on Tuesday it will join forces with Doosan Fuel Cell Co. to build and operate onsite hybrid power stations. Using fuel cells, the power stations will generate hydrogen energy and charge eco-friendly vehicles.
The two Korean firms signed an agreement on Nov. 21 to collaborate in the demonstration of production and use of hydrogen power.
Under the partnership, SK Energy will provide high-purity hydrogen generation facilities that the firm has developed, while Doosan Fuel Cell will supply and operate Tri-gen, its fuel cell that simultaneously produces electricity, hydrogen and heat.
Both parties will complete verification of facilities producing and charging 99.99% high-purity hydrogen in the first half of 2023, then set up onsite energy stations. The firms aim to generate 1 ton of hydrogen from a station per day, enough capacity to charge 200 hydrogen cars or 30 hydrogen trucks.
They will also charge electric vehicles with electricity from Tri-gen, as well as expand the number of hydrogen charging stations across the country by 2026.
