The price of manufactured food has been surging in recent months, beginning with ready-made rice, instant noodles, and snacks.
This week, canned tuna and milk have joined the list of foods that are getting more expensive.
Dongwon F&B Co. announced on Friday it will increase the price of its canned tuna products by an average of 7% from next month.
The price hike will be reflected at discount stores, supermarkets, and online shopping platforms – but not at convenience stores.
Come December, the light standard type will cost 2,880 won ($2.18) per 135 grams as opposed to the current 2,650 won.
Dongwon F&B said that the price of bonito has been increasing steadily due to the weakening won.
“As of October, the price of bonito has increased 30% from the same month a year ago,” an employee of the food giant said. “The price of canola oil and soybean oil also increased 45% and 59% respectively during the same time frame.”
The company increased the price of 22 canned tuna products by an average of 6.4% last December. The reason for the previous hike was also the rising operational cost such as the price of raw materials, labor, and logistics.

When the price of crude oil surged earlier this month, Binggrae Co. also announced its decision to gradually increase the price of its dairy products starting from mid-November.
The company is best known for its banana-flavored milk, and its price will increase by 13% to cost 1,700 won for a 240 ml bottle at a convenience store.
Binggrae explained the rise in price is inevitable due to the rise in prices of sugar and coffee.
Other dairy producers will increase their prices of milk from next Thursday.
