LG Energy Solution's AVEL opens ESS power plant in Jeju

South Korea's LG Energy Solution Ltd. said on Friday that its company in company (CIC) AVEL has launched South Korea’s first distribution grid-connected energy storage system (ESS) power plant.

AVEL held a completion ceremony for the plant on Thursday in Seogwipo, Jeju Island, and officially commenced its energy aggregation (EA) operations.

According to the company, the plant has a capacity of 6.3 megawatt-hours (MWh), enough to power 600 four-person households for one day.

The facility connects renewable energy sources directly to the ESS and the local distribution grid, storing excess energy and supplying electricity when required.

AVEL said it aims to address renewable energy supply volatility, driven by weather conditions, by leveraging ESS, grid integration technology, and local networks.

The company also signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) to collaborate on developing new business models for ESS, improving systems, and advancing technology.

Launched in late 2022 as LG Energy Solution’s first in-house independent company, AVEL has been working on securing power generation permits, acquiring sites, and developing grid integration technology.

This project marks the company’s first significant achievement.
