LG will unveil a new Therma V R290 Monobloc HVAC model with an advanced compressor at IFA 2024

LG Electronics Inc., a leading South Korean home appliance maker, is strengthening efforts to enhance its presence in Europe’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems market with a new, eco-friendly product.

The company said on Thursday it will showcase its all-new Therma V R290 Monobloc air-to-water heat pumps (AWHPs) at IFA 2024 in Berlin, Germany, from Sept. 6 through 10.

With the new heating system, which comes in capacities of seven kilowatts and nine kW, LG is expanding its high-efficiency small-to-medium capacity lineup to appeal to European households.

The unveiling of the new heat pumps follows the successful launch of its large capacity models – 12, 14 and 16 kW – at last year’s IFA.

LG noted that the new Therma V models come with an advanced compressor that boasts greater efficiency and a more sophisticated design.

ECO-FRIENDLY

According to the European Commission, all new buildings in the European Union countries must conform to the nearly-zero energy buildings (NZEB) standards.

With the mandatory implementation of the NZEB standards across Europe, LG said its 7 and 9 kW models are ideal for households and medium-sized buildings.

Proactively responding to Europe’s shift from traditional boilers to AWHPs, LG said its new products use the R290 refrigerant that aligns with Europe’s tighter F-gas, or fluorinated gas, regulations, which will ban the use of more harmful, man-made HFC refrigerants from 2027.

LG’s 290 refrigerant, a natural refrigerant, boasts a global warming potential (GWP) of 3, far lower than that of the HFC refrigerants commonly used in heating systems.

With an energy rating of A+++, the highest in Europe’s ErP, or energy-related products directive – LG said its new heat pump reduces carbon emissions by up to 79% compared to conventional boilers by sourcing its energy from heat in the air.

LG’s advanced compressor enables an output of water with temperatures up to 75 degrees Celsius even when the outside weather is minus 15 degrees.

Conversely, air conditioning is also possible by creating cold water through the process of transferring heat to the outside air, it said.

HVAC RESEARCH CENTER IN FRANKFURT

Demand for eco-friendly high-efficiency heat pumps and HVAC systems is rapidly growing in Europe, which imposes one of the world’s strictest carbon-neutral policies on home appliance manufacturers.

LG expects the European HVAC market to reach $13 billion by the end of this year and grow at least 5% annually on average over the next three years.

For efficient sales of its products across Europe, LG last month set up an HVAC research center in Frankfurt.

The LG Air Solution Research Center will be tasked with testing new residential, commercial and industrial HVAC products suited to extremely low temperatures in Europe.

The Frankfurt HVAC research center will serve as LG’s outpost to enhance its presence in the fast-growing European HVAC systems market.

LG Electronics Chief Executive Cho Joo-wan, who also goes by his English name William Cho, said earlier this year the company is making a big B2B push with a focus on HVAC products.

“LG will continue leveraging its differentiated competitiveness in high-efficiency energy technology to offer a product lineup tailored to regional needs,” said Lee Jae-sung, vice president and head of LG’s Air Solution Business.
