LG Electronics Inc. and Magna International Inc. have jointly developed an automotive electronics platform that integrates LG’s infotainment technology with Magna’s advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) and automated driving (AD) technology, LG said on Thursday.
The South Korean electronics company will demonstrate the “game-changing” integrated platform at CES 2024 in Las Vegas next week.
The electronic modular platform integrates functions for assisted and automated driving with infotainment technology in one high-performance computer, or a single system on a chip (SoC).
“The integration of functionalities into a single module enables the real-time sharing of rich data across domains,” LG said in a statement. “2027 model year vehicles are expected to be the first to benefit from this advanced technology.”
The SoC can handle various automotive safety integrity level requirements while using fewer electronic control units and thus taking up less packaging space.
It is flexible enough to be customized for carmakers’ requirements and is less costly than making separate domains for ADAS and in-vehicle software.
“This scalable solution is ideal for the coming transition toward the software-defined vehicle and for the consolidation of its electrical and electronic architecture,” LG added in a statement.
The modular platform can be also used as a human-machine interface (HMI) with advanced automotive displays, digital clusters, augmented reality head-up displays (AR-HUDs) and visualization software that supply ADAS with information and useful tips such as promotional information for frequently visited stores.
LG Magna e-Powertrain launched a plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, at the end of last year, its third joint factory after one in Incheon, South Korea and another in Nanjing, China. It is building its first plant in Europe in Hungary.
