South Korea's LG Chem Ltd. revealed on Thursday its plan to produce an eco-friendly plasticizer derived from discarded polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, marking a significant stride towards a sustainable plastic recycling mechanism.

Plasticizers, predominantly used in manufacturing flexible products such as flooring and car seats, play a pivotal role in enhancing the flexibility and elasticity of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

LG Chem's latest offering promises to curtail carbon emissions substantially when contrasted with traditional plasticizer production processes.

The company has slated December as the commencement month for the full-fledged production of this innovative product.

The announcement comes at a time when the world is witnessing a surge in eco-friendly market demand. Several US states are bolstering their green initiatives, pushing for policies that mandate a boost in recycled material use from the present 15% to a projected 30% by 2030.

LG Chem's pioneering plasticizer was conceived in response to the increasing demand from major North American clientele.

To lead the eco-friendly market, LG Chem acquired the US Global Recycle Standard (GRS) certification, a seal of approval for products incorporating over 20% recycled materials.

This standard is already embraced by many of North America's key flooring and textile corporations.
