South Korea's largest parcel delivery service CJ Logistics on Thursday said it signed a strategic partnership deal with Japan’s Ocean Network Express (ONE), a global container shipping company.

Under the deal, ONE will provide competitive rates and freight space to CJ Logistics' container cargo that moves around the world from Asian countries like South Korea, China and Japan.

Launched in 2017 and based in Singapore, ONE was formed through a merger of the container shipping units of Japan’s Big 3 in the industry: Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) Line, Mitsui OSK Lines and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line). ONE is the world’s No. 7 container shipping company in cargo capacity.

ONE is also a member of the global marine transportation group THE Alliance along with South Korea’s HMM Co., Germany’s Hapag-Lloyd and Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp.

CJ Logistics' agreement with ONE means the former has set up cooperative ties with two companies belonging to two of the world’s three global shipping alliances.

Last month, CJ Logistics signed a strategic business deal with Taiwan’s Evergreen Marine Corp., a member of the Ocean Alliance and sixth in the world in cargo capacity.

“We have an opportunity to raise competitiveness by securing a wider range of options in global container shipping and transportation,” a CJ Logistics source said.
