South Korean institutional investors, including the world’s third-largest pension fund National Pension Service (NPS), and global asset managers will discuss the economic outlook and alternative investment trends and strategies for 2023, with about 1,000 attendees, at a forum to be held in Seoul later this month.

The Korea Economic Daily will host the ASK conference, a biannual forum on alternative investments, at Conrad Seoul Hotel May 17-18. The event for Korean limited partners (LPs), global asset managers, brokerages and advisors has been held since 2013.

On May 17, speakers and panelists will discuss private equity and debt investment strategies and provide their insights on global macroeconomic projections.

NPS Chairman Kim Tae-hyun and sovereign wealth fund Korea Investment Corporation (KIC) CEO Jin Seoungho will kick off the first day’s forum with keynote speeches. Dan Ivascyn, managing director and group chief investment officer (CIO) at PIMCO, will also deliver a speech on opportunities across the global credits.

Including Goldman Sachs Asset Management, 11 global general partners (GPs) will outline their private equity and debt management strategies through presentations.

The GP session on private equity and debt, moderated by EnTrust Global, will share insights from Pemberton Asset Management, Tribe Capital, Abris Capital Partners and Clayton, Dubilier & Rice.

The hedge fund panel discussion will be moderated by Albourne Partners. Panelists from Wellington Management, The D.E. Shaw Group and EnTrust Global will discuss their perspectives on market trends and absolute return strategies.

The session for chief investment officers (CIOs) from Korean institutional investors will be a highlight of the day. Presided by Willis Towers Watson, four major LPs – Public Official Benefit Association (POBA), Teachers’ Pension (TP), Military Mutual Aid Association (MMAA) and Hanwha Life Insurance – will share their opinions on private equity and credit, asset allocation strategies and relationships with GPs.

On May 18, the speakers and panelists will discuss real assets that offer a hedge against inflation.

The second day will begin with keynote speeches from Gwak Bum-gook, senior executive managing director for mutual aid fund at Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business (KBIZ), and Richard Litton, the president of Harbor Group International.

Including big names such as Oaktree Capital Management, EQT Partners and Green Investment Group within Macquarie Asset Management, 20 GPs will explain their outlook on global real assets. They will cover various asset types like multifamily, which emerged as Korean LPs’ favorite real estate segment in a recent survey, student living, urban logistics, data centers, energy transition and agriculture.

The real estate session will provide a panel discussion between an LP and GPs. Moderated by Sera Global, Crow Holdings, Prologis, Savills Investment Management and POBA will share their views on current valuation and the outlook on the global real estate market.

The LP panel session will invite Korea’s major institutional investors to talk about their investment plans on real estate and infrastructure, perspectives on the market and standards of new partnerships. Moderated by Savills Investment Management, executives from NPS, KIC, Government Employees Pension Service (GEPS) and Kyobo Life Insurance will join the panelists.
