Hansol Paper Co., South Korea's largest general paper company, on Wednesday said it signed a business agreement with Samsung Welstory, a food and beverage service specialist, to develop eco-friendly paper packaging.

Under their deal, both sides will jointly develop such material for packaged food products at Samsung Welstory's company in-house restaurants. Samsung Welstory is the country's top group meals maker and provides food and beverage services at around 500 workplaces nationwide.

The eco-friendly packaging will feature paper customized exclusively for Samsung Welstory and the water-soluble coating Terravas. The two companies pledged to raise eco-friendliness and minimize damage to the environment by using recycled PET for package lids and covers.

Terravas coating is recyclable as it allows separation and discharge of paper after use when applying paper containers. The material is also resistant to water and heat comparable to the levels of conventional plastic coatings and can be used for rice, soup and fried foods because of its non-stick nature. It has received domestic and international certifications for an eco-friendly product such as eco-label EL606 and recycling UL2485.

Also receiving certification as safe food packaging from the Food and Drug Administration of the US and the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, Terravas is used by cafe chains and in delivery containers and meal kits.
