Flex Hybrid is Samsung Display's new OLED display model for smartphones

Samsung Display Co. will unveil a new type of organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display panel that can be both folded and slid.

At CES 2023 in Las Vegas, the display maker will show off the OLED display, Flex Hybrid, to major smartphone manufacturers, the company said on Jan. 3.

Existing display models for mobile phones are either foldable or slidable.

The eight-inch screen can be slid wide from the left side and the right side. It is 12.4 inches wide when fully extended.

An eight-inch screen fits into a smartphone, while a tablet PC is equipped with a 12.4-inch display. That means the foldable and slidable display will allow smartphone users to enjoy a screen as wide as that of a tablet PC.

“This monitor reflects the growing demand for hybrid products that can perform multiple functions simultaneously,” a company official said.

At the global tech event, about 310 companies and institutions from 173 countries opened their booths, including Google LLC, Amazon.com Inc. and Sony Corp. The three IT giants skipped last year’s exhibition.

CES 2023 is estimated to attract some 100,000 visitors, an 40% increase from a year earlier, according to the Consumer Technology Association (CTA) that hosts the annual event.

In particular, this year’s show features more mobility and artificial intelligence (AI) companies than ever.

Amazon’s Alex, a cloud-based voice service AI, teamed up with Lucid Motors, a self-driving vehicle startup, to showcase an autonomous delivery technology in a mobility booth.
