SK Telecom Co. said on Thursday it had transmitted terrestrial broadcasting in the US capital of Washington D.C. using mobile edge computing (MEC) and virtualization technologies with Sinclair Broadcast Group, North America's largest terrestrial broadcast conglomerate.
MEC technology provides ultra-low latency communication through a small data center installed around a base station to reduce data transmission distance.
The company used its Media Edge platform and ATSC 3.0-standard radio waves to transmit broadcasts in the Washington suburb of Arlington, Virginia. ATSC 3.0 is an American UHD broadcast standard that can transmit video, audio and data over frequencies.
The platform allows for the efficient management of broadcast services of hundreds of regional stations across North America without the need for specialty equipment, SK Telecom said.
